No worse than any other major European city - arguably better...... Brighton included. Can get a decent meal for a tenner or so and a pint for a fiver. Hotel miles cheaper than a London equivalent.

Basilica in the Vatican was closed - almost always is on Wednesdays apparently Didn't think the crowds were too bad at all. Our guide (going with a tour group does mean skipping all the queues) highly recommended avoiding the summer completely when it's absolutely mobbed and 40⁰ with no aircon.
