8.0.2 fixed that I think. iOS 8 did improve battery life on my 5 quite a chunk, i've since upgraded to the 6 and the battery life on that spaffs all over the 5.

You're right, apple does have its fan boys. However, from what i've seen recently, the anti-fanboyism that android users come out with these days is far more antagonistic, just have a look at the comments on any apple-related release and all you'll find is android fanboys jumping on every aspect...

there are 19,000 different android devices, there are probably around 30 running iOS. A better graph would be device market share rather than OS.
