    Another band we used to follow round the pubs of South and West London were Sad Among Strangers. Had a decent pub following but no commercial success.

    Fairly sure that I saw them support The Cure on an early tour. Also vaguely remember a band called "Where's the W?" which is mixed into the same memory. Just googled them, but no joy.

    Also, before Jon met Helena and went dancy, The Beloved were a fabulous indie band. Saw them in dozens of tiny pubs.

    Another great favourite from slightly later were Breathless. Always melancholic, but some great songs.

    One of my huge favourites at the time. "Ramified" was on just about every mix tape I did back then.
