Car tax discs scrapped after 93 years.

Agreed - it is a multi-agency system maintained by Capita. Each links to each other. Equally, the PNC does not hold MOT or insurance data. It's just the police can access the required systems.

They checked with DVLA - not the PNC.

Doh - that's exactly what I'm suggesting !!!!!!!!!! That way there would be no gap. The more you drive ( and pollute at the same time ) the more you would pay. Very simple. Actually the PNC doesn't hold this detail but carry on.

Car tax discs scrapped after 93 years.

Agreed - I got it wrong. That means less than a penny rise on the cost of fuel would cover it.

How would there be a gap ?? As for the big polluting Chelsea Tractor - they use more fuel so would end up paying more than an economical Citroen so would pay more in tax.

I'd have multi-quoted if I'd spotted this first go. Blue Badges are not valid on private land - they have no meaning ( despite what some landowners might try and suggest to you ). Yet, private car parks such as supermarket car parks have to provide parking for disabled people - as per the...

Car tax discs scrapped after 93 years.

Yes, I get that BUT it is the small independent brokers who tend to use specialised insurance companies and it is they that don't use the database. Report was on Watchdog last year ( can't find a YouTube video of it though ).

Care to back that statement up with evidence ? £60bn is raised with VED each year and £912,500,000 litres a year of fuel sold. That would add about 2.5p a litre.

You kind of shoot down your own argument though. VED is based on emissions - emissions are variable depending on how much you drive so will fall into the group you have numbered 2.

Just the disc and you'll be able to pay by monthly direct debit. Contrary to popular belief the authorities don't look at a windscreen for proof that VED has been paid - instead they outsource the task to Equita ( part of the Capita group ) to check with roadside cameras. These cameras pick up a...

I'm not suggesting that the government should subsidise public transport any more than it already does - just that it does. If they didn't our bus services would be worse, there wouldn't be free bus passes for pensioners and your train ticket would be more.

    1. In general farmers get red diesel delivered as could haulage companies if they were allowed to use it. 2. Local government already does to the tune of millions. 3. I know plenty of people that have cut back on fuel and drive their cars to the optimum to get the best consumption.

But it would be a one off and aren't pensions linked to the CPI rate in September ? Therefore introduce it earlier in the year and it wouldn't affect pensions ?

Those exceptions are people who buy through a broker who doesn't use the database. A very small amount apparently. If you can renew you VED online then you use an insurance company / broker who uses the database.

To be blunt, you'd argue the opposite of anything I suggested so I can't be bothered to debate with you.

Rubbish - young people are discouraged by high insurance premiums not the VED. Those that can afford cars with high VED ( the sports cars and 4x4's ) don't even consider the VED as it's such a small amount compared to the cost of the car.

Car tax discs scrapped after 93 years.

There's no need for an insurance disc as all cars insured ( bar a VERY few exceptions ) are on a database available to the authorities.

Indeed - my partner has a sports car and she does less than 5k a year ( sometimes much less ) yet her VED is twice the amount it is for my car in which I do 30k+ a year. Stupid.

About bloody time too. The cost of issuing them and the fees paid to the post office must have been huge !!! Now all they need to do is scrap VED altogether and put it on fuel. That way those that do the most mileage will pay the most and we will also get money off people visiting the country.
