Is that how it works? I honestly don't know. But there is a difference between a foul where you're trying to get the ball, and one where you have no intention of getting the ball.
The thing with the nibble on Moder was that it was petulant after the ball had long gone - those are usually yellows, even though the contact ended up being less than it could have been. Moder should have just gone down
If Moder hadn't been fouled, then maybe his foul should have been a red.
But surely the correct decision would have been free-kick to us and yellow card for them to the foul on Moder before he then goes flying in?
