Just picked up on this; Deutsche Ashram - Deeper and Deeper.
For those who like things a bit more shoegazey:
You might recognise Hastings and Brighton beaches here, though the band is Dutch.
Album can be streamed on Bandcamp and the band's Soundcloud page.
Sneaks - Gymnastics
Minimalist post punk consisting of a voice, bass guitar and drum machine, over what appears to be fragments of songs, there are 10 tracks on the album which clock in at just over 13 minutes.
Reissued this month after a very limited release last year.
Looks like Chromatics - Dear Tommy, follow up to 2012's 'Kill for Love' is due for a release this autumn. Promised in 2015 and drip fed a number of tracks through the year it all went a bit quiet, but a couple of new videos posted in the last couple of months point to something happening soon.
This one is getting plenty of plays at chez Trees at the moment. A mixtures of influences from the Slits to Huggy Bear to Bikini Kill via Newcastle. Great name too.
***Definitely not safe for work***
Some upcoming releases:
Still Corners - Dead Blue (sept 16)
Duo follow up 2014's Still Pleasures with more slick indie pop.
Lorelle Meets the Obsolete - Balance (Sept 16)
Mexican husband-wife team blend more shoegaze, Krautrock, Psych and Jesus & Mary Chain for 4th LP
No video yet, have to...
Some more reviews.
Mirror Gaze - Watch
Released as limited edition cassette but now only available via the Sivilised Recordings bandcamp page as a download. The first thing evident on listening are the vocals, singer Claire King is such a dead ringer for Alison Statten, that it really does...
Some more recent stuff
Lakker - Struggle and Emerge
More an extended EP than an LP but a cohesive whole all the same. Irish noise duo combine techno, jungle, industrial, soundtrack and Dutch field recordings to intepret the relationship between the Netherlands and water. 'Maeslantkering...
Let's Eat Grandma - I, Gemini
A release I've been waiting with interest for a while and after a few listens still can't decide if it's a work of demented genius or sixth form over indulgence. A whiff of Marmite can be detected. The duo, aged 16 and 17, are hugely talented multi-instrumentalists...
It is on spotify. I'd add it uses garage as a base but throws in french ye-ye pop, Gainsbourg and Spaghetti western soundtracks as other influences. Agree with Buzzer, it's a very enjoyable album.
Lead single features Peter Hook on bass
Some recent albums
Mexrissey - No Manchester
An album of Morrissey cover versions from a collective of Mexican artists are given Latin rhythms and lyrics translated into Spanish. Just seven songs here mainly from Mozzer's early solo period with the exception of 'Mexico' and 'The First Of The...
TV Girl - Who Really Cares
A laid back, detailed and wry look at life in the immediate aftermath of the break up of a relationship that also manages to avoid too many cliches.
Simon Reynolds is always worth reading, particularly 'Rip It Up', his history of the post punk era. Also Bob Stanley's (St Etienne) 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' which is a history of modern pop.
The backbeat is certainly from that era and did bring to mind this:
It has that pre-techno mutant disco feel.
Speaking of Germany I'm rather liking Aga Wilk's Moon EP at the moment; the use of analogue synths gives it a hefty dollop of Moroder influence.
Liked 'Whitest Boy on the Beach' but found the rest of the album a dirge.
Looks like the fictional band they played on Eccentronic Research Council's album of last year will be making a full LP this year which may be more interesting musically.
Those who like soundtracks might like to check out the one for Humans by Cristobal Tapia de Veer
My only criticism is that at 90 minutes it is a bit too long for one sitting.
A few bits and bobs
Amanda Palmer & Jherek Bischoff release an EP of Bowie covers using just a string quartet. Not a lover of Palmer's work but the version of Blackstar works really well.
Can be found here; Bandcamp
Charlie Hilton - Palana
Lead singer of Blouse released a solo LP before...
For those who like retro flavoured dream pop.
From the Canadian band's self released and self titled debut EP which can be accessed via Spotify, Soundcloud or band camp.
