    Yeah, it seems a ridiculous rule. Clearly the defending player wouldn’t commit the foul if they knew the attacking player would be flagged offside but how are they supposed to know for sure that the player was in an offside position and that the assistant ref would call it correctly?

    The one that got me recently (fan not knowing the rules rather than player) is that the free kick resulting from an offside decision can be in the offending player's half. The reason being they are standing in the opponent's half in an offside position when a ball is played forward. No offence...
