Just to clarify, I don’t find the word offensive and I doubt many do. Some might consider it mildly rude as I’ve always been taught it refers to an object / food etc and not people. I always thought it was just an incorrect use of the word. I’m coming atvit from a language perspective, not an...

In the stirring light of day I have reflected and your point above is a good one. I was taught at an early age it was an incorrect use of the word and I’ve never really questioned it since. Similarly, I’ve never really heard anyone refer to people as Orientals so I’ve had no cause to question my...

I do apologise. I didn’t see that question. I don’t know why calling a person “oriental” is wrong. For the same reason I’m not sure why calling a housebrick a Cup a Soup is wrong, it just is. Why has it been perpetuated? I dunno. Because the majority of people are idiots? When was this...

I answered your question. Fully. Just because the answer proved you wrong there is no need to be a sore loser. Feel free to ask as many times as you like, the answer will always be the same and you will always be wrong. I’m sorry.

You’re looking a bit bitter now. You asked, I produced. Don’t get all henhouse on me now, CO.

Let them bicker. We were correct, unequivocally. And we also made one of the dullest threads in NSC history , interesting. Our work here is done.

Oxford English Dictionary says it refers to regions, objects, art etc and cites referring to people as Orinetal as offensive and outdated. The Oxford English Dictionary. Good enough for me. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/oriental I think we’ll call that the last word on the...

Most articles have it wrong online. I will have a look and let you know. I was taught it at school. I imagine most of the Masters are long gone I’m afraid but rest assured they were well travelled, vastly experienced men who knew what was what.

For a man with my education correct use of language is not a choice.

Whose telling anyone to be offended? Oh and heads up: it’s 2019.

Yes. It’s “sometimes used”. It’s not correct. And I am willing to concede I may be wrong here but I don’t t think the police do use the term “oriental” to describe people. I believe they use a system of IC codes to avoid these exact discussions or accusations of offence/racism etc...

No, I maintain I’m correct I’m afraid. It’s a long perpetuated mistake. As an aside, it’s rather a useful term as we all know who is being described but it is incorrect and therefore I don’t use it.

As I’ve said. Whether anyone finds it offensive or not is not the point I’m raising. The point I’m making is it’s incorrect use of language.

I’m not saying don’t use it. I’m not saying it’s offensive. I’m saying it’s incorrect. You’re the one making an argument out of it. Anyway, you should be thanking me. My knowledge on the subject has taken one of your characteristically dull as ditchwater threads and made it into something...

I No need to be abusive thank you, Pastafarian. East Asian would be the nomenclature you’re looking for. I have explained it a couple of times now. Some have agreed, some have disagreed as is healthy but it’s not that hard to actually understand what I have said. For most people.

I disagree. My sister in law is Chinese and doesn’t like being called Oriental. It’s a common and entrenched mistake that has been perpetuated for many many years. Offence is a personal thing but it is incorrect . I had no idea it was outdated in North America. I was taught at school some 30+...
