Alternatively google equal pay council liabilities (since the legislation is not exclusive to refuse workers) to see the messes elsewhere (e.g. birmingham) and perhaps recognise that it took the Greens to do what was actually required in Brighton.
Refuse workers in Brighton have gone on strike...
The legislation applies to the public and private sector. Google 'Equal Pay Act Private Sector' and it should bring up loads of info including why it has had (to date) less imact in the latter. Worth noting that the legislation is primarily gender based hence the comparison between...
They're really not (too stupid). They have to adhere to equal pay legislation or be potentially liable for massive equal pay claims from employees. They don't essentially have a choice and could jeopardise the council's finances if they didn't apply a process to compare and value all jobs. Honest.
Hmmmmm. Equal pay legislation and liabilities meant this had to be dealt with (see link above). Previous Tory and Labour led council's didn't go near it. To give them some credit the Greens dealt with it and reduced / removed these liabilities. They are now trying to maintain this position...

I believe they agreed the previous changes (and were probably compensated for doing so). From what I have read they are not facing a current proposal to cut their pay but simply want to be paid more for the same work.
We may have previously exchanged comments on equal pay legislation and...
I may be mistaken but think the drivers and their union previously agreed the council's evaluation of their job and are now seeking to renege on this. The changes were made to limit equal pay liabilities not to deliver on cuts.
Or not - depending on 'arrangements'...always interesting to see bin lorries and trade vehicles in the same lay-by...those poor drivers have got to supplement somehow...
