Interesting debate re free kicks and player walls

According to the clip, a wall wasn't deemed sporting. But Italy, at the time, were a class apart and DBF thought 'we've got to do something'. I'm gonna have a rummage around google and see what's about, so some links might appear here in a bit...

Interesting debate re free kicks and player walls

Anyway before I get too silly. I'm liking the idea of not doing what the attacker wants when it comes to kicks closer to goal. It does make sense:- 'I'm going to train for a very specific situation'. 'We are going to exactly replicate the specific situation you have been practising to beat'...

Thereby moving the free kick into a position where he can handle the ball from the resulting free kick, all at the expense of a yellow card. Come on man think about it. :lolol:

Interesting debate re free kicks and player walls

The point is nobody has tried it. How free kicks have been taken, walls etc, have been the football equivalent Pavlov dogs for 60 odd years. What if we only put the little players in the wall. Interesting debate re free kicks and player walls

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but the examples raised were 2 separate ones. Free kicks from distance - Do you even need a wall? The more 'traditional' freekicks from say 20 yards - Should the wall be exactly where the attacker trains for them to be?

Interesting debate re free kicks and player walls

As an aside former 'keeper David Preece (who I'm quoting above) is singing Ryan's praises for passing the ball. "Given license from his manager he will play the most ridiculous passes but the difference is he can do it... brave with the ball, better than Claudio Bravo".

Interesting debate re free kicks and player walls

When Northern Ireland did the first wall, there was an almighty kerfuffle, during which time the Italians moved the ball back 5 yards, and scored anyway. But walls were still deemed to be a good thing.

Interesting debate re free kicks and player walls

on James Richardson's new podcast. Is the wall a case of 'well we've always done it like this'. Is a wall effective or just playing into the hands of the taker? A player wouldn't beat the keeper from 30 yards one on one, so why have the obstruction? Perhaps the attacking side would have to...
