I'm very pleased for Froome. He's a great rider, a lovely bloke, and it's good to see a Brit win.
But it's Sky. I boycott Sky TV because of Rupert Murdoch, and find it hard to feel any kinship with them as a team. I love G, loved Wiggo, and will support many of their riders individually.
But I...
Well...Porte's chances were talked up enormously this year.
But no, it wasn't a surprise.
Why do you say 'Forget Quintana'? Do you think he's finished?
Absolutely. But Froome had several teammates who should by rights be team leaders in the Tour. Sky's deep pockets hoovers up too much of the talent.
Not the case with AG2R or Astana.
So Bardet's and Aru's teammates, repeatedly, could not keep up with the unremittingly high pace, leaving them...
It'll be lovely if you're right.
It would have been interesting to have seen how BMC and Porte would have done this year, and Quintana should never have doubled up with the Giro. He was a shadow of the rider we've seen, and the lack of Valverde didn't help.
Personally, I hope that Estaban...
But until they can attract the quality of riders in the quantity that Sky have then these moments will be few and far between. On the long climbs it was only Sky who consistently had a large contingent left to support their team leader.
Money talks.
There was a huge advantage to Froome. If you have four riders with you from your team and the other contenders have none there are so many tactical options open to you - sending a rider up the road, taking it in turns to attack, supporting your rider back to the front if he has a problem etc...
To be clear, I am NOT accusing Froome of doping. I think he is riding clean.
It is Sky's absolute dominance and complete control of the race that is so similar to Armstrong's teams - it is monotonous, and the depth of their squad makes it incredibly hard for anyone else to win individually...
Definitely. Cav, Cummings and Millar all enjoyed positive support - as did Wiggo before the Sky hatred took hold.
Sky's dominance is similar to that of US Postal Service/Discovery in the Armstrong era. They were hated, and always suspected of doping, and we all know how that turned out.
And...
The video screen above the start gate showing each rider counting down the seconds until they start with their hands has to be one of the cheesiest things I've seen.
But I like it, for some inexplicable reason.
