Under the circumstances, what a brilliant Games. Well done Japan for putting this event on without spectators and taking a financial hit for the team.
You can't beat the Olympics for the purity of sport, the stories of dedication, triumph and disaster. A wonderful break from the...
Marvellous scenes in the Modern Pentathlon as the German favourite's horse has a meltdown, fences all over the ground, tears streaming down the girls's face, refusal after refusal, gold medal disappeared. Schadenfreude at its finest.
The Kenny Household has 14 Olympic medals, 11 of them gold.
That's more golds than India (pop. 1.395 billion) have won in their entire Summer and Winter Olympic history (9).
The men's 50km walking race was hilarious. Not only is the technique extremely camp but one bloke even had a water bottle in what can only be described as a handbag.
I particularly enjoyed the Japanese votiming on himself, collapsing on al fours on the kerb pounding the ground in frustration...
After the high of GB Mixed Triathlon gold, GB 400m hurdler Jessie Knight trips and smashes into the first hurdle, tumbles out of the heat. 4 years preparation for that. Total wipeout.
Marvellous scenes.
What a great way to start the weekend.
I'm very pleased for Johnny Brownlee who saw his brother win 2 golds and now has one of his own.
I am generalising here, but there is an issue within Team GB about funding, about levelling up and access to resources. About one-third of GB medallists attended fee-paying schools and British medallists are four times more likely to have been privately educated that the general population...
Defenders that don't jump, a keeper that doesn't dive.
GB and Ellen White = Palace and Zaha. One-woman team.
Really piss poor from GB. Fair play to Australia.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Put simplistically:
Rowing = a sport for posh kids and the elite at Oxbridge
BMX = what chavs do on council estates and the skate park.
The GB Men's Four were weaving around their lane like a drunk making their way home. They almost went out of their lane on their left, then over-compensated and crashed through the buoys on their right. They'll be lucky not to be disqualified, the Italians were almost rammed.
