It did and many did hit a wall when their concerns were raised. The PO restructured the auditors with many able to take early retirement. My friend jumped at the chance.
Without going into details my friend said that because they visited Post Offices frequently they built up friendships with...
The auditors only highlighted discrepancies they then passed on the information to the investigators. They wouldn't have been aware and not given clearance to get call records etc. The auditors would have been in the dark as much as the postmasters
The sums involved vary so much and for me this is the issue. Some it was 10's of thousands other maybe only a few thousand, how they work out what each gets is important. It should reflect not just the financial but very much the mental/physical impact. It really is mind-blowing.
My understanding from my friend is that pre-horizon all transactions were recorded on paperwork thus allowing the branch to fully reconcile each day and pick up errors. When the system was introduced the only recording was on the computer. The system didn't allow the branch to download a full...
This is the problem though. The pressure is to dismiss all the cases since the introduction of Horizon. Before Horizon approx. 30 cases went to court a year, this rose to 80 post introduction. Though there has been a huge cover up and innocent people have lost everything including their lives...
I haven't at any point questioned these people and have been at pains to say most were completely innocent however some were not. If you re-read my posts I point out that my friend, as an auditor, stated those that HAD taken money often it was obvious and relatively straightforward to find where...
I appreciate that but the example given to me the money was traced to another account. A shop with little stock suddenly had full shelves for Christmas.
My friend who was an auditor said they caught some red-handed and proved beyond doubt. But as he said they were easy as his team would have monitored them as a business for a while.
There’s been 800+ convictions since Horizon was introduced some of them would be justified. too much money and time would be wasted attempting to find which ones though.
This I agree with. My friend who I posted about earlier in this thread, as an auditor his role was to train and audit. If they found something they reported it. As he said to me, and gave examples where often it was obvious that looking at some businesses, on finding discrepancies it was obvious...
A very good friend of mine was a PO auditor until he took early retirement (best decision he has ever taken, according to him). He ran a team of auditors. His role apart from training was simply to audit, if issues were found his team escalated it. This is when the investigation team came in. He...
