Just listened to Ben Ottewell's new album Rattlebag. I have to say initial impressions are very good. If anything slightly more edgy than his debut with a tad more trademark Ottewell rasp. What a great voice this guy has and although i'm a big fan of Gomez i think sometimes it gets undersold in...

Having now listened to, and purchased the aformentioned Timber Timbre's ' Hot Dreams' i wholeheartedly agree; it's fab! As mentioned it's quite difficult to liken it to anything else. In addition to the Lloyd Cole/ Elvis Costello Goldfrap mash up i'll thrown in a bit of Nick Cave, Tindersticks...

The top 5 definitely represent my favourite 2014 albums but the other 15 are all interchangeable: 1. Timbre Timbre 'Hot Dreams' - this is a magnificent album, cinematic almost and with a definite David Lynch feel to it. Imagine Roy Orbison or Lloyd Cole singing Elvis Costello lyrics to...

Tend to agree, although for me i lean towards Reckoning/ Fables Of The Reconstruction. Apart from the odd honarable mention i think they lost 'it' for me post Document.

I'm loving the album by The Both, an Aimee Mann & Ted Leo collaboration. Fans of either will be impressed. Leo's 'Neil Young-esque' guitar had a bit of 'umph' to the always excellent Mann. 'Milwaukee' the first single is a good taster. Recommended!

Really getting into the new Eels album, The Cautionary Tales Of Mark Oliver Everett. Mostly sparse, quiet songs with a great big dollop of lyrical darkness. Not as upbeat as the last couple but excellent imho. Also a shout for the new reissue of XTC's Skylarking. Brilliant sound quality...

Missed him on Radio 6, but if that got your interest i'd take a punt on the album. After all it's only taken him 30 years to follow up his debut solo offering so it gives you plenty of time to get into it before he releases the next one!

Ben Watt's Hendra is a classy album imho. Not for everyone granted, and he's abandoned the 'tiddly plonk' stuff and returned to an early EBTG vibe (Which is a good thing) Bernard Butler plays on most of the tracks too, so what's not to like.

Very much looking forward to the final album in Radical Face's Family Tree trilogy. Also a possible new album from Ben Cooper's other guise Electric President. New tracks to be released as a taster soon, apparently. So all good.

Augustines - Augustines. Pretty good although they do seem to have upped the 'big sound' for this (Ala The Hold Steady etc) In my opinion not quite up there with their first 'Rise Ye Sunken Ships' which was a brilliant album. Dark and low key. Definitely worth checking out though.
