Two unforgettable films in the last 7 days - LoveFilm is spoiling me:
The Station Agent. God, what a brilliant film - a subtle, moving and funny study in dignity. American indie film making at its very finest. 9.3
Run Lola Run. Yes, everyone saw it when it came out but I'd not. A touch of...
Nosferatu - 1922 silent German horror classic. Beautiful locations, the first filming of the Dracula novel 7.8
Batman Begins - lavish very superior comic strip epic with real brains as well as balls. 8.5
Come off it - NSC's self-appointed film expert not having any discernible powers of judgement other than being drawn towards schlocky cheap manipulative emotion is what makes this place so GRATE.
Europa Europa - appallingly inappropriately-jokey title for low-budget but fascinating true story account of how a German Jew survived WW2 by joining the Hitler Youth (the original title is Hitler Youth Solomon). Great film.
7.5
It's a SCORCESE film. With Robert DE NIRO in it. From the 1970s. And I like MUSICALS and JAZZ, both of which feature in it. So how can New York, New York be so bloody awful?? 2.7
La Vie En Rose - even if she'd never sung a note, Edith Piaf's hideous life story would make an unimaginably grim epic tale of appalling tragedy - neglectful mother, brought up in her grandmother's brothel, blind for long periods of poverty-ridden childhood, dead child of her own, love of her...
Nothing personal and no offence of course but I think the idea of NSC's film expert being someone who dislikes any films with any evidence of brains in them is actually a very funny concept - it sort-of reminds me of the grumpy children's entertainer in Hi-Di-Hi who can't stand kids.
Italian For Beginners - I totally love Danish Dogme films and it was quite nice to see one without any women dying protractedly at the end for a change. Very, very funny and the customary brilliant, flawless acting and script. Recommended. 8.1
So, this week I have watched:
Shampoo - very California, very 70s, very "why can't I just be a bit more like Warren Beatty?", quite funny, oddly downbeat ending. I want to f*** Julie Christie.
I Confess - not the most famous or gripping Hitchcock - he's never at his best with dealing with...
