I'm sure I'm not the only graduate of the School of African & Asian Studies at Sussex University to have been disappointed by Thabo Mbeki's time as President. In my time at Sussex (after Mbeki had left), the place was a haven of South African dissidents in exile and great things were expected...
Not at all. Post-apartheid South Africa came into being as a result of Mandela's commitment and ability to negotiate a democratic constitution based on votes for all citizens.
We also need to recognise that the ANC, under Nelson Mandela's leadership, was fighting to achieve a non-racial society - a cause that should be celebrated, however difficult it is to achieve.
Mandela's detractors are at least coming across as apologetic / defensive. Time was when his opponents had no problem describing themselves as "white supremacists". Mandela himself deserves much of the credit for that shift in opinion.
