Why do you pay the same price for a cup of tea in a cafe even if you don't take milk or sugar - how is that fair?

I'm afraid you're wrong there! 2011-12 Personal Tax Allowance is £7,475 and then the 40% tax rate is charged on £35,001 above that so you need to earn £42,476 to commence paying 40% tax!

So you are paying 40% tax on a benefit in actual value of around £3,000 and you therefore earn in excess of circa £50,000 per annum and you are moaning about £30 per year! God help us!

People who are vehamently anti the idea can chose not to buy a ticket in the first place. There is a waiting list for ST's so if you are not prepared to pay the price asked for a ticket then go elsewhere and someone else will buy your ticket.
