The whole idea of adding Acadmey sides to the EFL trophy was to give those players a chance to test themselves against sides made up of more senior players than they’d normally face in PL2 etc. It’s always been about development.
We could parachute in the likes of Hinshelwood, Ferguson, Enciso...
Even in the knock out rounds they still try to have the academy sides away when it can be agreed between the teams, even if it breaks the tournament seeding that happens in the second round.
The Wolves game was against fellow academy side Man Utd. Man Utd should have been the home side as the...
In the first few seasons the only rule was that Acadmey sides had to have 6 players under 21 in their starting XI. There was no rule stating there was a maximum of 2 overage players with more than 40 appearances. Under current rules we’d have never been able to play the starting XI we did...

Back in the 17-18 season when squad rules were less strict for academy sides we started a game against Stevenage with the...
Interesting they’ve changed the QFs back to regionalised as it hasn’t been since the academy sides joined the competition. Saves our players a potential trip north for one more round and that section of the draw has a real northern feel to it this season.
Means we will be playing one of AFC...
I don’t think McGill counts as an overage player. The rules for overage player is anyone over 21 who has made 40 or more senior appearances. McGill has made 37 appearances and most of those were in non league football. You are allowed 2 players that meet the overage criteria in the starting 11.
I didn’t realise it was considered a senior competition for the academy sides too. Explains why Cam was on the bench and got on in the FA Cup as he’d already played in the EFL trophy for us this season so a second loan move wouldn’t have been possible anyway.
Youth football doesn't appear to count towards the two clubs rule.
Anders Dreyer played twice for our U21s at the start of the 19-20 season. He then moved to SC Heerenveen on loan for the first half of the season playing 20 times. We then recalled him from loan and sold him in January 2020 to...
