What is the actual rule on pass backs? Surely it's not just on the basis of whether it's intentional or not?

Near the end of the game, one of the Palace centre halves hooked the ball back to Speroni who picked it up. Anyone who watched on tv clarify whether it could have been? Couldn't tell from where I was if it was done inadvertently or not - even if it was, can it still be ruled a pass back?
