8th overall. 4th on the bike and 7th on the run. I've found people's swim leg on Strava and it seems the swim was about 1200m so I managed around 22 minutes for that. I obviously wanted to be fastest on the bike but I was on my road bike with normal wheels and no aero helmet so I reckon I...

I don't think I'm that fast so I suspect the course was short. The majority of the field were under 30 minutes and I think the timing included t1

2.08 as it turned out with a 24.51 swim - must have been overtaking the sprint wave that went after us but only did 1 swim lap!

2nd tri and first standard distance this morning, with my first open water swim. Swim was eye opening, didn't mind the people around me but my technique went to pot. Don't know my time yet As I'm waiting on the splits. Bike was good and given my swim, it felt like i overtook about a 100...

Ha! £800 is definitely in the "budget" category. 2 grand is fairly standard for a decent bike but you could (very) easily spend that on wheels. The problem with triathlon (rather than sportives etc.) is you want aerodynamic and aero costs money! The difference between a standard road bike...

A but but obviously not enough. Next time I'm going to slather it on!

If I had the money then maybe. My current cheapo speedo suit chafes the back of my neck to pieces. Having never had another suit, of course, I have no frame of reference!

First open water swim with the "gps under swim cap" technique. Seemed to work well and confirmed that I'm definitely quicker in open water than a pool. Gps tracking seems quite good - http://app.strava.com/activities/332586886

That's a shame. I'm eyeing a half iron for next year and I feel like I'd need a lot of solid 3/4 hour rides logged on the bike before attempting it.

Depending on your confidence on the bike, I'd also look at getting some tri bars. Quickest and cheapest way to make yourself faster. Take some getting used to though.

This might help - http://road.cc/content/buyers-guide/143748-12-best-road-bike-bargains-under-500 If it's only halfords then the boardman bikes are fantastic. Halfords are shit for any kind of knowledgeable staff or service but the boardman bikes are great.

1000m on 16m is definitely not average, that's pretty fast! I'll bump this over to the cycling geeks thread for advice but what's the budget? These days there are great bikes at a £1000 and even some pretty solid ones at 500. Have you got the cycle 2 work scheme with your employer, let's you...

Well, I suppose you're already soaking wet! Good luck. I have to say that I never minded the rain when I was racing, once you're wet, you're wet. My first tri wasn't wet but it was only 7 degrees for the bike according to my garmin so that was a bit of a shock running out of an indoor pool...

How did the half ironman go? How was the di2? First open water swim in the wetsuit today. What a revelation, felt so much better than swimming in a pool - legs that aren't constantly sinking, nothing to break the rhythm and, although I can't tell how fast I was going, felt good through the water.

I've seen that. There seem to be an awful lot of swimming systems (TI, ocean Walker, swim smooth) that will take a few hundred quid off you to revolutionise your swimming! I'm trying to see where they overlap and concentrate on those things but I'm not getting any faster! I'm stuck at around...

The di2 should be really nice for a TT bike, changers on the tri bars and horns have got to be a big plus. Not sure I'll ever bring myself to have an aero bar bottle though!

I liked at them too as I'm an asics cumulus man. I think they're designed for no socks and are pretty lightweight so maybe not an every day shoe. Aren't GT 2000 for pronators? Are the noosa neutral?

If you'd told an 18 year old me that I would be getting up at 4.30am to do a swim in a mucky river before a bike race, he'd never have believed it!
