https://www.bbc.com/news/business-66049915 "Sri Lanka: Five-day bank holiday for domestic debt restructuring" "Sri Lanka began a five-day bank holiday from Thursday to allow the crisis-hit nation to restructure $42bn (£33.2bn) in domestic debt." Brits love few things more than a bank holiday...

[Finance] What should the government do about the coming base rate mortgage hike time bomb?

At least (some) people are now starting to publicly talk about Brexit as a significant cause to the financial mess the U.K. is in. It’s a start I guess.

Rejoin the customs union and the single market, things will improve overnight especially with food inflation due to the removal of costly red-tape and a stronger pound on the tons of food you import from the EU. It really is this simple.

[Finance] What should the government do about the coming base rate mortgage hike time bomb?

I have said before, it's obvious the silver bullet is rejoining the customs union and the single market. This would turbo-charge the economy overnight. I do find it odd that no political party is offering this obvious solution.

If only you were a Tory cabinet member then your neighbour would be right to ask. you could furnish them with a fat contract for something he has no experience with.

I cant say I know anything about the regulation but there are some big differences here. 2 key ones are that it takes 2-3 weeks to buy a property (chains dont seem to exist; properties are ready to buy)....and you can get 40 year mortgages which run beyond your lifetime i.e. you can pass the...

[Finance] What should the government do about the coming base rate mortgage hike time bomb?

Fair point. I had not considered this. When I have previously looked at long term fixes the rates went up with the length of the fix. This would have been when rates were low. I always assumed the longer the fix the higher the rate as there is 'more' uncertainty the further out you go. I had...

Just read the average UK 2 year fix is now 6%. A 13 (thirteen) year fix in Germany is 4, in France it’s allegedly even lower. What’s the reason for these huge differences? I have asked this before, a year or so ago, but didn’t get an answer. Genuinely interested to know why there’s such a...

Would people really object to social housing blocks? The can’t be any worse than the grim rabbit hutches which get sold as fancy lifestyle options/solutions eg the blocks around Brentford’s ground or that abomination at Tottenham Hale.

In Germany, and to a much lesser extent the UK, a proportion of housing is owned by socially minded not-for-profit organisations. I guess a UK equivelent is something like Peabody. Why dont these organisations get more involved with building UK housing? This is a genine question as I have no...

It's a very British response. Same with the hardship brought on by Brexit...some were saying we'd got through far worse after the war.

[Finance] What should the government do about the coming base rate mortgage hike time bomb?

More housing needs to be built but building regulations need to be brought in as well; there needs to be a stop to the mass built poorly constructed rabbit hutches and ugly tower blocks which currently get built. If I was PM for a day I'd ban design and build...there needs to be seperation...

[Finance] What should the government do about the coming base rate mortgage hike time bomb?

I agree, it works well. But it will not work in the UK 1) You will need to build up a very significant and large stock of social housing. 2) There needs to be a lot of joined up thinking eg the need to fund healthcare so that care in old age is addressed and covered financially. Brits often...
