Fair point re Booking.com. A lot of the actual hotels are to blame as well. When I go running somewhere near Alexander Platz I often see hotels which are suffixed with Alexander Platz e.g. Ibis Alex Platz even though they're a mile or so away.
Gogonzola Club and Ottorink....that's a night out...
For some reason I thought you were staying in Friedrichshain hence the bar recommendations over that way. You found some good places though. Schopperbrau/Torsten Schopper was making pale ales in Berlin ten years ago when no one had heard of craft beer. Him and Heidenpeters were the first in...
As for cocktail and wine bars this is not really my area. I go to one, which is a small jazz listening bar which does excellent wines and cocktails in Prenzlauer Berg but it's quite a trek from where you are and still a trek from the nearest public transport. https://www.rhinoceros-berlin.com if...
I have not been to Union game for a few years now, pre Covid. Games sell out as they are flying high and only have a small ground BUT they operate an exchange similar to the Albion. You might need to become a member but I imagine if you’re determined and have the time you will find a ticket. I...
Onto swimming. Personally, I think you are blessed coming to Berlin as the city is surrounded by numerous lakes where can go swimming and there’s various open air (and indoor) pools. Lakes typically have an organized area where you pay to go in and there’s facilities, these are called...
I'll try and find this book myself. I do find this sort of thing interesting. Regardng the wall and the cold war, what interests me most is how the DDR was after the wall came down i.e. how did it function immediately when the DDR rulers left. how did things operate/function? Or not function...
They have moved back out again. I think Viktoria use it now. It’s going to be knocked down in a few years with a new modern municipal 30,000 stadium built in its place.
Beer in Germany is very regional and although there are varying style across the country, e.g. Altbier and Kolsch, you will not easily find these styles outside of their regions in a bar. If you go to a traditional corner bar (Kneipe) you will almost certainly be served a lager from one of the...
Drinking is certainly allowed, smoking in some grounds. Last time I was at Hertha people were puffing away behind the goal.
I dont really follow much football in Germany, the Albion takes all my footballing energy.
A Copenhagen football and culture weekend will be excellent. I have only been once but loved it, it ticks so many of my boxes. Well, I loved it until I got my credit card bill..it's very expensive.
If history is your thing maybe, it’s a historic stadium of architectural merit. But Hertha BSC were relegated last season so watching them in a half empty 70,000 stadium might not be appealing. Maybe try Union instead, it will certainly be a better all round footballing experience.
First a a couple of questions.
When you say German beer do you mean other traditional styles like Kolsch? Or modern craft beers? Or both?
Outdoor swimming, lakes or swimming pools?
Yes. If the bar is below a certain size the owner can declare it a smoking bar. Or bars of any size can have a separate smoking room. Or if your in certain parts of Neukölln or Kreuzberg the rules don’t seem to exist regardless of size or rooms.
Where to stay depends on if and what you want on your doorstep. The city is very well connected with u-bahn, s-bahn, trams and regional trains so no matter where you stay you can get about easily enough. Although, if you stay anywhere close to, or outside the ring, it will be very quiet.
The...
