French far right National Front 'routed' in key vote

Maybe not semantics then. Maybe my emphasis should be on the context of their 27%? It will be tough, almost impossible, for any extreme and/or non-mainstream party, left or right, to run France due to their system.

French far right National Front 'routed' in key vote

We can semantically debate what minority means, and I agree when viewed in isolation 27% is a fair amount. But when viewed in the context of the 2-run system and them being an extreme party, it isn't IMHO. Typically the party-which-gets-precluded-from-the-second-vote's supporters will swing...

French far right National Front 'routed' in key vote

Where have I said I support the French system and/or the way the outcome was achieved? I said "It suits me" but this is all and it doesn't mean I necessarily support the way it was achieved. I was deliberately sticking to the fence when I was posting yesterday but was hung over so might have...

French far right National Front 'routed' in key vote

Rightly or wrongly the French second vote system protects against minority parties. It will take a hell of a jump for Le Penn to actually win. Or a complete change in the voting system. I can't see any reason for either of these to change any time soon. But I agree, never say never.

No. I do not consider 28% with a 1% lead substantial. Far from it. In fact this couldn't be any clearer given yesterday's out come could it? You really do not understand the French system do you? Please go and have a read up on previous French elections especially the first vote and then what...

Why does having no prospect of power suit her fine? PS it suits me fine.

"His comments followed a difficult night for President François Hollande’s party, with final results showing it took just 23 percent of the vote nationwide. That put it behind both the FN's 28 percent and the 27 percent gained by centre-right Les Républicains (formerly the UMP) and their...

It will be a fool who tries to predict a UK "cross" these days. The last election showed us this.

French far right National Front 'routed' in key vote

I see you have edited your post to now add a dig at the EU. It's not how they do it across the EU, obviously. It's how they do it in France. In a run-off style of voting why would parties lower down the voting, as the Socialists were with 28%, stand a second time? That's the point of this system...

French far right National Front 'routed' in key vote

The two-round system (also known as the second ballot, runoff voting or ballotage) is a voting system used to elect a single winner where the voter casts a single vote for their chosen candidate. However, if no candidate receives the required number of votes (usually an absolute majority or...

You obviously don't understand how the second run works do you?

French far right National Front 'routed' in key vote

France's far-right National Front (FN) has failed to win a single region in the second round of elections, exit polls indicate. Early results suggest the party was beaten into third place, despite leading in six of 13 regions in the first round of votes a week ago. The polls predict Nicolas...
