Good news, as expected the work at Purley is running behind schedule.
Also issues with the work at Victoria i believe - Gatwick work running to schedule.
That would cost the same as HS2 as it wants to tunnel everywhere and it wants to "double-deck" railway lines over tram lines in South London - never mind that Croydon is full to capacity of trains, as are the Southeastern lines to London Bridge.
May well be cheaper buying everyone a helicopter.
Certainly, another option floating about is a connecting line near Arundel to link the Littlehampton - Horsham line to the West Coastway line, could then run direct Horsham - Brighton trains, also to/from London via Sutton avoiding Croydon - and anything that avoids Croydon is a good thing.
Anything done to improve the network is a bonus.
The Express will now get it's own platform - the FCC and all "fast" London services will stop at the same place as now.
I worked in it for a brief period. That and a family member works for Southern so i get a fair bit of detail from them if needed. Other parts are just common sense.
Got the Billions it would cost then ? Work is to upgrade the signalling at Victoria (which regularly fails), to replace a junction at Purley (which constantly has speed restrictions and is incredibly bumpy) and a new platform at Gatwick (which will reduce congestion). A few days over a quiet...
Fairly sure its built into the Code of Practice which all train companies abide to which compensation doesnt need to be given to passengers with season tickets for work which has been planned for a certain length of time. Also depends on the length of the work. Still, when it overruns you could...
Network Rail would be covering the cost of Southern's extra staff and replacement buses, possibly covering lost ticket sales as well as they will of course lose passengers travelling because of this.
Going to be problems tomorrow too. The diverted London Victoria - Gatwick Airport service which was due to run via Sutton and Horsham wont be running as the Dorking-Horsham line has suffered a large landslide.
Southeastern have also taken the somewhat over-cautious approach of not running...
Sitting in a wheelbarrow filled with excrement is nicer than travelling with FCC.
That said, i have to use FCC for once on Saturday - ill feedback how terrible it is.
Again, Network Rail don't have shareholders. And you can throw extra staff at something all you like, if the weather makes unsafe working conditions, then it's pointless. That and there becomes a line where there is too much staff.
Yup, said that if the weather was bad, it might have a knock on effect and it probably will now as strong winds are expected on Friday and Monday. Line is due to open at 4AM on the 2nd.
Monday 6th might be a good estimate, if the work gets done on time - then credit to Network Rail for that...
Guess the only good thing about the Redhill and Quarry Line landslides is that they now have time to fix it.
Of course, the Xmas work will now overrun because of more storms on Friday.
Southern starting to run services in the London area as it has been least affected.
Major signalling failure at Balcombe with flooding too - Mainline won't be cleared quickly. Lots of trees down and level crossings damaged. Loss of power at Horsham too.
Buses difficult to get due to poor road...
