Never came close? If we upped our final bid by £200k we'd have got VVD. He was a youngster at the time so wages wouldn't have been a big problem. Would have bossed our defence for a few years then moved on for a handsome fee. You know this is all true :thumbsup:
We fired him.... we could have accommodated him or reasoned. Showed what a good manager he is at Sunderland. I think he's the best manager we'll have for quite a while now.
Perhaps letting Poyet go was a mistake, not because of his managerial tactics but because of his eye for talent. Turned Bridcutt, Buckley, Barnes and Noone into highly rated players and really wanted to sign Van Dijk who is now rated at £10m!
Take the money and add a % of future transfer fee in the contract. If he does somehow overcome his injury problems we may get a nice payout in the future.
