Trouble is, once you hit them, it's you that has committed a traffic offence. There's a hostel near me, by a busy road, with an off licence on the other side; residents frequently just walk across the road, regardless of traffic, which has to slow down and stop as they wander across. Like it's...

Very moving. But I can't help wondering how soon they'll be back in their cars, with their mobile phones up and running, safe in the knowledge that in their heart of hearts, deep down, they know "Yeh right, but it won't happen to me".

No, banning hands free isn't realistic; it would also be stupid - it is much safer than the alternatives. Of course, it is a distraction, and any distraction is undesirable, but unless we're going to start banning in-car stereos, radios, satnavs, chatty passengers and fractious kids - all as...

A normal conversation involves visual contact as well as verbal - we nod, look to see how our message is being received, all sorts of body language is involved. Just as distracting as talking on a hands-free mobile, especially if the passenger is in the back seat! I notice the Independent's oh...

I was actually comparing and contrasting having a conversation with someone on a hands-free mobile and a conversation with a live passenger. Both equally distracting. Your suggestion appears to suggest banning all activities which involve taking one hand off the wheel, which is entirely...

Surely they could use something similar to the procedure for getting flashed by a speed camera? Send a letter requiring the registered owner to name the driver, and then ask the driver to decide whether to pay the fixed penalty (fine and three points) or go to court. A few might take the court...

    Genuine question. Why not?

Should ban having conversations with passengers as well then.

Good idea. But unfortunately unblocking devices will be on sale via the internet within hours.
