Make a list of all the software you need (I refuse to call them "apps"), and check out Linux alternatives. I find my list of programs I can't replace is getting shorter, but they tend to be major things like Lightroom and GPS stuff.

Yuk! Mind you, I sort of assumed they did that already if you sign into Windows 8 with an MS ID, so I just use a local password. I guess Google do all of that with my Android tablet, though.
Possibly in the future, but definitely not for at least a couple of months. Wait and see what the general opinion is, and let other people gain the experience to help you! Windows 7 should be fine in the meantime.
I've spent most of the day re-installing Windows 7 on a laptop for my mum, then I want to install 8.1on an SSD to speed up my own PC. Don't think I could face another Windows installation. :mad::mad::mad:
