I watched 'A Quiet Place' tonight.
Wow. A really good horror film is so, SO hard to find, but this is a beauty. Not overly gory, but the sheer dripping tension and creeping dread is, I think, right up there from when I first saw Alien. Set in a near apocalyptic future, much of the human race...
If thats what you're after, it delivers in SPADES. Yes the plot gets rather convoluted, yes some of the incredible escapes are ridiculous, but its just an absolute thrill-ride from start to finish. Cruise is 56, but you'd never know it. He just throws himself into this role and totally owns it...
I went and saw Mission Impossible: Fallout the other day. Superb. Tom Cruise is on top form, he's one of the few actors who can still dominate a movie with sheer charisma and screen presence. The violence is stupendous, the action scenes brilliantly choreographed, the stunts are thrilling, the...
So did I.
I watched it soon after returning from Mexico where we visited the ancient Mayan pyramid at Chichen Itza, so it was good to see a movie interpretation of the Mayans following on from having just been there there. Good movie (with the usual uncompromising gore and brutality thrown in...
Hacksaw Ridge scored 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, so the critics liked it (it scored 91% on audience reviews). It received 6 Oscar nominations and 3 Golden Globe nominations - Garfield winning Best Actor. So you're most certainly in a small minority with your opinion.
Few people go to the cinema to be educated - its just a slice of entertainment, a bit of escapism, and will always take some artistic licence with the facts in order to drive the story and ramp up the drama. I never really understand people grizzling when a movie that is "BASED on a true story"...
I'm an 80s geek so I love all that shit, but I think the film as a whole could certainly have done with some editing, particularly the final act. But if you're enjoying the book then I don't think you'll be too disappointed with the film, its an interesting concept and something a bit different.
Ready Player One
Didn't really know what to expect with this, but its a fun ride. Set in a dystopian 2045, everyone escapes the depressing reality of what the planet has become by existing in a VR world called Oasis, playing as their own avatar, in an enormous game, seeking three keys that will...
Nailed it.
Proper cinema, wonderful film. I'm looking forward to a second viewing. The performances are just so rich and enjoyable, much like Fargo (another brilliant performance from McDermond). So many actors on the top of their game. Its just a great film.
Largely agree.
Oldmans performance was far better than passable IMO, and that serves to elevate the film above the sum of its parts. But a great film it is not. The underground scene was highly contrived, and a bit silly.
Yep, just watched Three Billboards and loved it. McDormand, Rockwell and Harrelson are magnificent. Beautifully written and acted, some laugh out loud moments interspersed with some shocking violence, menace and poignancy. Proper cinema this, best film I've seen in months. A solid 93%.
The Darkest Hour
Decent, if rather dry. Oldman is incredible as WC, the awards are nailed on. But I was hoping for a more sweeping narrative, where we see the results of his decisions within the theatre of war, but the movie is very much contained and focused on him and him alone. Its an...
