I can also remember the debates on here, wondering whether we could hit the quoted break-even figure of 12,000 STH's after the initial excitement had died down. We were seriously debating if we could regularly fill 22,500 !

If you removed an arch, then the entire roof would collapse. That would be a problem. If you removed a roof, then I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve, because you still wouldn't be able to fit a higher roof, because the arches wouldn't be high enough to hold it.

No. The two arches lean back away from each other, counterbalancing each other, pulling the ring of steel up that goes around the whole roof. That steel ring that the arches are attached to goes through all the roof girders. Think of it like standing opposite someone, holding hands, and leaning...

The arches hold ALL the roofs up, not just the east and west. The arches were quite en early part of the construction, they had to be. None of the roofs were in place prior to the arches. I'm sure Jack Straw would have some much better pics illustrating this.

But look. How can you raise those roofs without removing the arches ? If you elevate the roofs, then the arches would obviously have to be raised / rebuilt in order to support it. Whichever way you slice it, you're looking at a MAJOR rebuild after dismantling it. And that's not something that...

Nicely done! That just gave me a bit of a semi. They dug down and added another tier at the Nou Camp for the 1982 World Cup, so there is a precedence for it. Not sure if we'd still have room for a full-sized pitch though. Might be a bit of a squeeze.

The north and south stand roofs are also supported by the arches though - there is a "ring of steel" that goes right around the whole lot. Those arches lean back against each other, counterbalancing each others weight, and in effect "pulling" the roofs up into place. You can't put the roofs on...

Its not ridiculous at all. The arches that support the roof are deeply embedded in concrete thrust blocks buried underground. If another tier was added anywhere, those arches would have to come down and the roof taken off so it could be raised sufficiently to accommodate it. So yes, you'd...

I went no a stadium tour during the final few months of construction with Martin Perry and Richard Hebbard. It was quite obvious that the East stand had been designed with expansion in mind, the level was already in place for an upper concourse. Perry alluded to the fact that the entrances and...

Blimey, this seems to be cropping up a lot lately. Its impossible to put another tier anywhere in the Amex, without disassembling the whole thing and pretty much starting again from scratch.
