I am not sure after 1970 that anyone has ever expected England to win the World Cup. Not even in 1990. Not even in Germany 2006 - which was our best chance since then.
I mean you are right. But of the the great tournaments was 1970 - my first proper watching, and all I can think of is Leon, Uwe Seeler, and Peter Bloody Bonetti.
Too early for World Cup fever. It may take a while longer to get going if Hodgson takes all the old lags and ignores the young guns.
