Prior to your reply i wasn't familiar with Kafka. Having just read the kafka wikipedia entry when describing his work the line below struck a chord.
"a sense of striving even in the face of bleakness".
The essence of commuting from the south coast to London at the moment.
I do think it is slightly amusing that Southern deem it ok to state safety concerns when closing Falmer station, yet when the RMT state the same concerns with DOO it is not worth considering.
To my knowledge guards do not exist on Thameslink trains who have adopted DOO already. The occasional ticket inspector shows their face every once in a blue moon. I imagine this is the model that the RMT are trying to prevent occurring on the Southern trains.
As has happened several times to me lately, when the camera's aren't working the trains do not stop at unmanned platforms such as Preston Park. 2 members of staff, a driver and a guard doesn't seem like too much to ask for.
This is exactly my thoughts on the current situation. I should imagine GTR are happy for this dispute to carry on as long is it can as it deflects attention away from their inability to run the franchise effectively.
I'm not sure what other options they as a union are left with to be honest. What i find frustrating about this is that this industrial action is masking what is fundamentally a failing franchise.
train home yesterday from city thameslink reduced to 4 carriages absolutely packed. Whilst all the problems at London Bridge are ongoing. With the reduced service they are currently running you would think that there would be plenty of of spare carriages knocking around to ensure all services...
Surely the absolute last thing that GTR want is to resolve this dispute. What on earth are they going to blame the appalling train service they run on if not this dispute?
I caught one of the new trains home yesterday..... i had hoped for better. The two seat configuration are lacking leg room and incredibly narrow, whilst there are no tables at all. Good news though, there is a flashy display that tells you where the nearest free toilet is and which carriages...
I think they are interesting points you have raised, however i see it slightly differently
a) I would argue that the service wasn't OKish.. the london bridge situation and general low level of staffing constitutes a poor service. The general level of train cancellation prior to the industrial...

For anyone trying to get out of London Bridge this evening.... sink hole at ForestHill all trains look to be cancelled at the moment.
One positive upshot from the temporary timetable, they seem to have freed up some more modern trains. Usually have to suffer the 3&2 seat configuration on my way home but the newer trains have been used the last couple of days.
I am one of those commuters and to be honest i think at the price i pay, there should be a guard on the trains. I have had multiple occasions recently where the trains don't stop at Preston Park because the cameras on the trains don't work as a result they can't tell if the platform is clear...
