Albums that have left me cold: Hurts - Surrender They've not gone anywhere since their first album. This new one is auto-tuned to hell and by the sounds of it deliberately pitched for lots of commercial radio play. Maybe I'm just not their target audience. Ben Folds - So There I've...

Hmm.. not sure if you'll be totally enamoured with this album then. The Gus Gus techno influence is still very evident in this new album too. Amazing to think he can go from the Americana-laden sound of The Czars to full blown techno. Can't be too many musicians who can claim that range.

An album that I've been returning to again and again is Waxahatchee's 'Ivy Tripp'. Sort of fuzzy lo-fi guitar indie folk with lots of Pixies, REM influences. It wasn't an instant hit with me but it just gets better and better with every listen. The album has her playing at various times fey...

I agree completely. It's what ruined it for Antony Hegarty in my opinion. I think I even said on here that I was worried that JG would box himself into a corner if he kept on banging on about his issues in his music. Got to say that i love the new album from first listen. There's the old school...

Must try to get back into this thread. A few very short reviews of albums I've been listening to: Lana Del Ray - 'Honeymoon' The backlash against her is in full swing to the point that the first words on the first track are "We both know it's not fashionable to love me..." and she's not wrong...

Beach House - 'Depression Cherry' One of my favourite dream pop bands with a very subdued but quite gorgeous album. I might even go so far as to say that this is up here with the very best dream pop I've ever heard (and I've heard a lot, esp the Scandinavians). It really is music to daydream...

2 new albums that I can't recommend highly enough, I've had them on repeat all weekend. Georgia - 'Georgia'. Young North London girl who incidentally played youth team footie for Arsenal and QPR before working at Rough Trade releases her solo album. Occasionally she sounds like MIA but a...

I must get round to writing a few reviews of some cracking new albums out, in particular Gwenno (former Pipettes singer with a Welsh language solo album) and also Ezra Furman - both are probably going to make a lot of Best Of lists at the year end. In the meantime, here's the first single from...

Tess Parks and Anton Newcombe - I Declare Nothing Canadian-born Tess Parks has collaborated with the Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe for this very exotic-sounding album. Newcombe provides the warm, fuzzy psychedelic guitar with loops, feedback and the type of structured chaos...

Mountain Goats - 'Beat The Champ' I think a few people have mentioned this album on here but not sure if there's been a review. I've had it a while and was listening again to this album last night and this morning after seeing it in one of those best albums of the year so far and I'm mighty...

It doesn't take that long. I tend to listen to an album a few times with headphones and then as background music so have a pretty good idea what I want to say. I only write a few lines for each album so it's not really a proper review and I don't think I'm particularly imaginative with my...

I wish I 'got' that album. It's like colour blindness, I've had people point bits out and say how good they are and I hear something different. Just listening to the Nadine Shah album again. Now, I get that.

Yet more reviews. (sorry!) June has been an exceptionally good month for new releases and here's a few more that in my humble opinion are up there with the best of them. Algiers - 'Algiers' Oh my, what an album. Seriously, if you listen to just one album this week then please make it this...

Apologies - yet more reviews! Terakaft - 'Alone' Another Malian rock/blues band but this one is quite different from their Malian contemporaries: Samba Toure, Songhoy Blues et al. They describe their sound as authentic desert blues and from the sound of the music and that description that I'm...

Nev Cottee - 'Strange News From The Sun' This was quite a discovery, it's the Mancunian (well - Oldham actually) born singer's second album although he's brand new to me. He used to be in country rock band The Proud Marys (once again, never heard of them) and apparently there's a strong Noel...

Thanks, I'll check those out. I misread at first and thought you meant KidWise - a French band that I like who are on bandcamp: https://kidwise.bandcamp.com/ Back to It Hugs Back, the more I listen to this the more I like it. The only thing that irks me (and it is slight) is their name. It...

Glad to hear that the Sea of Bees was good, my mate's brother used to be the drummer for her and she's quite lovely, very genuine. Some more reviews... Damaged Bug - ' Cold Hot Plumbs' Side project of ever-so-prolific frontman for Thee Oh Sees, John Dwyer. He swaps fuzzy psychedelic guitar...

A Grave With No Name - 'Feathers Wet, Under The Moon' Definitely one of those albums for quiet reflection, it was perfect for the start of my commute this morning. It's quite beautiful, each tune an incredible show of musicianship and the lead singer's voice reminiscent - very reminiscent - of...
