We're talking about promotion between the top two divisions. Third North and Third South did indeed only have one-up-one-down (which changed to three with divisions three and four) but the First and Second had two-up-two-down.
And if two northern teams went down from division two they'd re-jig...
I said in another thread but the era where the third-placed team was automatically promoted was actually quite short, only 13 years (1974 - 87). For about fifty or sixty years prior to 1974 it was only the top two. THAT'S how it used to be and what I grew up with! (And no I don't want to go back!)
Indeed. Mind you it wouldn't be the same without some killjoy pointing out something along the lines of "Well they can't all get that number of points so it's a bit stupid isn't?" Each club potentially CAN get that number of points. Like the annual St Georges Day binfest (due any time now)...
