Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

Pretty much here: But that's not the point. This thread wasn't supposed to be about how to fund NSC - that's all taken care of as things stand. It was just about the possibility of giving some users an ad-free option if they wanted it.

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

Am I writing in a foreign language or something? Once again... 1. I am not looking to, or proposing to, charge all NSC users to use the site. 2. I am not looking, or proposing to, charge some NSC users for enhanced access to the site. 3. I am asking if there is enough demand from those who...

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

As I've said repeatedly on this thread - I'm not talking about charging anyone anything! I'm aware that some people don't like the adverts so I was merely asking whether there was sufficient demand for me to do the work to enable an ad-free version of NSC to be available to those who want it...

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

Yes - I've seen sites where 'subscribers' get various things like... - signatures (or bigger signatures), - avatars (or bigger avatars), - custom titles (where yours says 'Registered User'), - a bigger PM capacity (only 20 messages by default) However on NSC I've given everyone almost...

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

I haven't because there's no problem with funding NSC. It's not broke, so there's nothing to fix etc. This thread was just to ascertain if there was sufficient demand to remove the ads whilst still supporting the site (something that ad blockers do not do) to warrant me spending the time to put...

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

    Yep - that's fine.

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

    Thanks - I don't have signatures on.

You won't be seeing NSC at all soon.

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

To answer you directly and to try and state it again: this wouldn't be done to raise extra revenue for NSC. The current revenue/cost model works just fine. As things stand NSC has to display nearly 800 pages to users before someone clicks on an advert. Then another 800, and so on. But that's...

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

When I bought the last upgrade, I bought a version that didn't need annual renewals. That cost £216. A time will come, however, to move onto the next major release which will cost a similar amount. But the cost of the licence is peanuts compared to the hosting.

If you ignore that the forum software licence if more than that alone, you might be right. Unfortunately, being able to support close to 4,000 concurrent users online at a time without skipping a beat, costs considerably more than that. £75 covers NSC for a 2-3 days at peak times.

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

People who block ads on NSC contribute nothing to the wellbeing of the site. Your viewing of NSC might get a bit more difficult for you.

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

Google run the whole ad process - or their systems do. Some ads will only earn for NSC if they are clicked upon, some pay if they are viewed. I have no idea which are which. What I can tell you, from the reports I can access is NSC earns... - about 60% of income from ads that are on the page...

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

No - there would never be a two-tiered system in terms of what you could see, where you could post or how often you could post. Anything extra for those paying would simply be gimmicks, but nothing significant. You'd be no worse off for not having them.

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

The Argus site is so horrible to use, that having a content-side of NSC with the latest news etc is something I'm also considering. Not unless there was so much coming in for 'subscriptions' that it negated the need to have adverts. I suspect that's never going to be the case. You can use...

Adverts on NSC (and paying not to have them)

Once this season is over, whenever that is, I'm going to be making a few changes to NSC. One thing I've considered for a while is whether anyone would be interested in paying to have an ad-free NSC experience. Ads fund NSC - it's as simple as that - but I know some people don't like them. So...
