I would think the player would be happy to do it if then left to his private life afterwards. Obviously the children would like it and it wouldnt do the clubs good name any harm.

Would it not be easier for the school to ask him if he could perhaps stay for 30 mins one day and have a signing session in a classroom possibly with a team mate or two.

To me this appears that he doesnt want the children being pestered at school rather than as it has been posted he doesnt want to sign them. This seems quite reasonable to me, if they want his autograph ask him or better still get the school to arrange a signing session at some time.
