You're on the right track. Bluetooth can be used for connections for distances of metres away but NFC (near-field communication) only works when devices are touching or a few centimetres away at most.- BNthree

So you have a card you that you tap on the top of the reader? If so there will be an NFC chip in it that identifies you to the system. (*EDIT* which I see Bold Seagull has already answered)- BNthree
