Not sure of price but I'm sure it's more than £50, but it's worth getting rid of the lead pipe and you can have a softener fitted.

I would get an estimate to get a new water main. A specialist company will do this using a machine called a mole. I've seen homes have this done when there has been a leak underground on the incoming water supply. Best to Google Water main replacement or ask advice from your water supplier.

If he can afford one of those fancy expensive taps I would hope he also hasn't got 70 year old pipes in his home :)
