    Great spinner though he is, if he does well in this poll it would be because of his religion and culture as much as his talent, none of which are likely to have affected his game in any way.

    Almost certainly. But the fact that he was there and playing as well as he did was another massive boost for them from the off. If there's no room for sob stories, romance and heroism in sport, you might as well watch chess.

    Darren Clarke - shoe-in. Everybody was saying how he'd have to miss the Ryder Cup after his wife died - only six weeks ago, ffs - but to play at all and to play as well as he did was sheer emotional and sporting magic.
