I don't see it quite like that - the team performed when they knew they were realistically down. Hardly unusual ... it happens most seasons when the pressure's off.
Not my point.
I was demonstrating that Zamora's signing wasn't a case of luck; it was one of taking a substantial, calculated gamble that paid off. The Turienzo signing is comparable not for the specific fee involved, or the quality of the player, but because it too was a gamble based on...
Maybe, but that still doesn't make the Zamora signing in any way lucky.
Also, I don't believe McGhee had no say in Turienzo. No credible manager in this country allows their chairman to buy players they don't want. He's at least partly responsible.
I don't buy this idea that he was "lucky" with the Zamora signing - he found a player from reserve-team football and paid what was for us a very substantial amount of money for a totally unproven player. He'd have taken a lot of flak if it'd backfired, so I can't see that it's anything but right...
I very much doubt that.
Money isn't enough to get out of the lower leagues - Northampton, to name just one team, have spent years and an absolute fortune trying to do just that, to little success.
What Adams did was create a team with incredible spirit and self-belief, supplemented by...
Granted, the loan signings have generally been good (although there's always Shaaban and Yelldell), but I'm not sure Carole can count as a success, and Frutos is as yet still a debatable one. Also Henderson - I rate him, but the way he's spoken about on here, I reckon plenty would have him in...
On that point, I agree - whoever the manager, a Championship survival battle is the best we can really aim for until Falmer arrives. However, results have never been my major issue with McGhee.
Four months is barely time to turn around a complete mess - although he succeeded insomuch as they didn't go down, and their relatively successful season last year is testament to the ongoing good job he's doing there. I'd be suprised if they're not in the playoffs this year.
Who was managing them when we were under Coppell in the Championship? I seem to recall them sealing promotion with a 2-0 win against us ... I could have sworn that was Adams.
The difference being that Micky, one unfortunate, and fairly minor, incident with Dave Cameron aside, dealt with such things in-house, rather than running bleating to the press every time something happened. Hence, he was respected by players and fans alike ... I'm not sure the same quite...
Re: Re: Re: Re: Adams vs McGhee
Great, but I don't think McGhee's few past successes are likely to mean much to Brighton fans if he can't replicate it here.
Adams, however, has been consistently successful - currently doing a superb job at Coventry.
Re: Re: Adams vs McGhee
I'm sure Coventry didn't finish in the bottom six last season; I could have sworn they had a great run towards the end of the year - and he got Leicester promoted to the Premiership!
I can't see that there's any comparison to be made between Adams and McGhee. The...
