That semi-automated system works more accurately. I suppose whether it’s ‘better’ depends on whether you’re keen on players’ toenails being ruled offside. The law needs to be loosened to redress the balance.
From the Premier League website:
“VAR is used only for "clear and obvious errors" or "serious missed incidents" in four match-changing situations: goals; penalty decisions; direct red-card incidents; and mistaken identity.
But factual decisions such as offsides, and the issue of whether a...
I suspect the story missed their deadlines. It wasn’t something reporters at the match would be likely to notice at the time. I’m sure there’ll be more attention paid in the coming days, though nothing like the outrage it would prompt if it happened to Arsenal, Liverpool, City or the like. Which...
Fair enough. Good point about the interlaced footage. On the ‘when is the ball kicked argument” I can see there’s still a lot of room for inaccuracy. That’s why I think there needs to be much more leeway built into the offside law if they’re to persist with VAR (they will).
I hate the system as...
It’s incompetence not conspiracy. I agree the self-appointed big 6 still get favourable decisions when we play them. I think that’s unconscious bias influenced by several factors. The idea that refs are somehow plotting to keep us out of Europe though is nonsense. If they were, they could easily...
Makes sense to me. Fans wouldn’t be anywhere near as annoyed about a player being pulled up when they’re offside by a distance. A cm either way barely matters then. It would be more like a tight call with a flag. They need to increase the tolerance to get back to the purpose of the offside law...
I hate it too but it’s 50 frames per second from several cameras specifically calibrated so that even the camber of the pitch is taken into account. So it’s not guesswork. When they use the correct player(!) it’s precise. Too precise. The issue I think is not the accuracy but whether finding...
They’re really not guesswork. The still image is not the technology used to make the actual decision - it’s just a representation. But, if you did draw the line from the wrong defender as is being suggested, it doesn’t matter how accurate the technology is…
