Agreed.
It's up to Webb to develop a system which improves the quality of refs.
Getting rid isn't necessarily the answer.
Although I hope he's man enough, to let those who are failing know, they have to improve to keep their job/status.
That's interesting, looking back I see the Liverpool decision was just an acceptance of a wrong decision, rather than an apology.
I seem to recall we received an apology for the Southampton decision, maybe not.
There have been countless examples where we've been on the wrong end of controversial decisions ( 3 clear and obvious penalties not given against Welbeck alone)
I was purely referencing the ones SO BAD that the PGMOL had to apologise, rather than the "suck it up buttercup", we have become...
Agreed, but the nature of the game means that being sure you can always be in line with the critical moment is challenging even for decent cameras.
The new technology looks amazing, but we are still trusting that it's a true representation of the critical moment.
I'm not convinced.
If cricket...
Cricket adopted Umpire's call for their most complicated decision (LBW).
Cricket has:
a fixed camera
a static target,
monitoring a single object
travelling through a predefined area.
Proven, Industry leading software to evaluate the decision
Football has:
Multiple camera angles
Multiple...
The problem is that you can have reasonable doubt with the current technology.
Assessing when to freeze the frame is open to error, as is the number of frames per second.
This will improve, but the technology at present allows for millimetre decisons to be contentious.
Without checking that's a minimum of 3 official apologies from PGMOL, for VAR errors
Palace
Liverpool
Southampton (penalty outside the area)
Not forgetting the Lee Mason meltdown at West Brom of course.
Is that high?
It seems high. Or have all clubs got similar tallies?
"Seeing red cards given for less" shouldn't be the bar though.
You could equally argue that Robertson's challenge on Mac is the bar for yellow cards.
Contact with Studs onto shinpad doesn't necessarily make it a sending off offence.
The red card is available for reckless challenges, or intent...
Arsenal one probably worse.
Can kind of see how the mistake was made for ours
Lee Mason just forgot to check for offside in Brentford's goal.
Let that sink in.
Forgot to check.
What's his job again?
I would suggest there needs to be a check he hasn't completely missed a glaring infringement.
Maybe if the opponents are claiming an infringement, they need to specify what they want to be checked.
Sure every club will appeal every goal, but they need to be right
Yeah fair points.
But that...
Selling VAR as solving the problem of "wrong decisions" in football, was a mistake.
Rugby and Cricket have got this right.
Ref/Umpire makes a decision and asks for clarity on things they aren't 100% on.
If they've missed something glaring, the decision gets overturned - if it's minimal stick...
It seemed to take an age to tell us that VAR was checking and then an age to check.
As you say it's bizarre.
I often have to do some analysis as part of my job.
When I make an error, more often than not, I spot it quickly, because the data doesn't make sense.
Surely this was the case here...
