My question as well. When I saw the pictures in real time it looked clear that Mwepu was offside....as it still does in this picture. The discussion was about whether he interferred with play with his misskick.

Has there, or will there be, an official response from the on-pitch and/or VAR referee?

VAR was awful when it first came in, and various issues were immediately addressed eg the introduction of clear and obvious error . It seemed to improve but this season it’s gone back to being awful, and not just our game today. What has changed?

Attempting to play the ball alone isn’t an offence, this attempt needs to also interfere with the opponent. “ clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball”

Yup. The defender got a good clearance on the ball, so wasn’t interfered with, and that should have been the end of it.

Absolutely. I’d actually say even more bollocks than if it was a straight offside; at least that’s objective.

The BBC and NBC post match analysis both say the ref disallowed the goal not for the offside position per se, but Mwepu’s off side position interfering with the subsequent clearance. I disagree with this, Mwepu didn’t touch the ball and in my view didn’t interfere with the clearance.

Fair enough. But it wasn’t a marginal offside in this case; the goal wasn’t disallowed for this. I do think the benefit should have been given to Brighton and the goal given though.

He wasn’t checking for offside per se, he clearly was, but whether Mwepu’s offside position, and failed overhead kick, had interfered with the clearance….according to the post match analysis. Very subjective.
