The Barnes transfer didn't involve a release clause though. It was simply that there were no indications he was going to agree a new deal, so the Albion (wrongly IMO) decided to accept the low offer rather than let him walk for nothing in that summer.
As mentioned earlier, they have made a point of NOT using any young players in cup games (even at 4-1 up against Rochdale, the two subs they brought on were matt Lowton and Chris Wood) so that they don't have to 'count' them as 'senior' players in this context.
67 minutes, in the PL, as it goes.
What matters though is that we HAVE trusted them to play (16 combined EFL Cup apps / 2 x FAC / 4 x PL), and as such they are now considered 'available players' when the PL are considering any future request for a match postponement.
Its (at least partly) why...

They "couldn't field a side" to play Leicester on Saturday, so was always likely that would remain the case three days later. I'd imagine their issues will ease a little once their stand-out best player Maxwell Cornet returns from the AFCON...
