Indeed, they could say "due to high demand we've opened the ticket exchange and X extra tickets are now available" or the like. Us STH would know what sold out and exchange means but causal fans wouldn't.

*EDIT*
Wished they didn't say it's "sold out" as at first glance that might make the casual fan think there aren't any tickets available.
I'd argue they'd make more by opening the exchange than not doing so. Get full price for the seats that were originally sold at season ticket price plus food/drink/programme/shop sales. A lot of people, especially those with kids, don't want to be anywhere near the Palace scum for this match.
It was with that in mind I said it was usual practise for the club to wait until they've all sold. But yes there was a match recently when there was less 100 tickets left they opened it early.
Usual practise is the exchange will open after the club have sold all their own tickets. So those 150 need to shift first before the exchange tickets are available.
Reckon there is a good chance that the Man City game will the first match this season that Exchange tickets will go on sale for. Currently about 175 tickets left for club to sell; there's currently more than that for sale in 1 block alone for the the Arsenal game!
For those people, and those that split cost of season ticket 50/50, the official way of sharing is perfect. It’s the miss one or 2 games a season folks it’s not ideal for.

This weekend is only match I’ll miss this season I reckon. If I paid £20 and friend paid £28 that’s £48. They could buy a match day ticket for £35. Why bother paying more and jumping through hoops? It’s on exchange but highly unlikely to sell given the clubs tickets haven’t sold out.

Explain please? If they sold it for £25 to a STH, refund then STH and then sell it for £45 that's £20 more than they had previously. How do they make less profit?
They'd make the same profit on it as their own seeing as they refund the STH pro-rata amount and sell it at full price. Means they'd actually be making more money than they had before as obviously the full price is more than the season ticket price.
