Agreed about Alcatraz. I went there on the first trip of the day in November years ago, it was an overcast and dull day and there were only about 15 of us on the trip. Depressing but very atmospheric and a bit of a shock to this Southern softie.
Looked like an easy swim back to the mainland but...
Going against the grain of virtually everyone I know who has been there I was seriously underwhelmed by New York
Pick any one of a multitude of songs about there
Right on three counts, yes it is a bit niche and yes Nashville is much nicer than Memphis which I was shocked to find had beggars, the music connections make both must visit if at all possible though
Gracelands, apart from the OTT entrance is a really nice place and not at all...
I really liked San Francisco, especially the gay area with some wonderfully coloured houses and interesting shops (Does Your Mother Know) and restaurants. In contrast I thought LA was an absolute shite hole
True, I love Barcelona but like all big cities it does have some very shit areas. Valencia is somewhere that improved dramatically around the time they hosted the Americas Cup.
Route 66
I made a (very short!) detour to drive the road of my dreams when I was in Amarillo. The road quality was more third world than the roads in Worthing, although not that obvious in this photo
The New Jersey Turnpike
I should have known better but at the time I had no idea what a turnpike was
"Kathy, I'm lost", I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all come to look for America
All come...
