Quite right, you spotted my deliberate mistake! the Comet l mentioned actually came down in northern Spain, enroute to Barcelona in 1970. 112 fatalities tragically.
The problem was, as your pic highlights perfectly, that the Britannia was a turbo prop that was introduced at the beginning of the jet age. The Alitalia nd KLM aircraft pictured next to it are both DC8's, faster and much more fuel efficient. Propeller powered airliners were dead in the water...
I too was lucky enough to fly on a Bristol Britannia, back in the early 70's, albeit a Monarch Airlines example, from Constanta in Romania to Luton. The Whispering Giants as they were known, were wonderful aircraft to fly on. Such memories.
That would almost certainly have been a Dan Air HS748, which the airline continued to operate well after their sell by date, from Gatwick to Berne. I remember flying on one from Gatwick to Jersey in the mid 80's, great fun!
