Sorry, but does sound like you're a bit of a car crash of an employee, at least on this occasion in your boss's eyes. Boss just wants the shift covered. Boss isn't in the least bit interested in your convoluted explanation/excuse. Just sounds like the dog ate your homework. Maybe time to move on...
