Greg Clarke's statement is the most powerful repudiation of the proposal yet - with a nasty, not-so veiled threat to the big clubs to wind their necks in. I was impressed
Oh I know. I was wondering what would happen if all the other big clubs set a Super League up anyway, would the English clubs not participate? Barca, RM, Bayern, Paris, Juve, Milan etc would have plenty of clout
I thought there were already plans for an increased number of CL games, regardless of any other changes.
And I really, really can't see 14 EPL clubs voting for a reduction in the number of teams - I'm not even sure they'd get a majority for it
EDIT: This is only considering English clubs...
People keep talking about the Big Six (and other European teams) wanting a European super league but I'm not wholly convinced about this. These clubs have a lot of clout and could easily set one up - and I'm sure would get TV money to back it.
The fact they haven't done so suggests that a)...
It's a great rant - although given the way that the government has handled Brexit and Covid, I'm not sure I'd be too confident of their ability to sort out the mess
by the way, I like his calculation that 19th club gets double what the 20th gets and the 18th double what the 19th ... and so on...
That's a little detail that's not been mentioned. So, rather than being a bailout for the EFL, the clubs would end up with less money and see two of their number out of the door.
The big question is: why is Rick Parry pushing this? It's clearly not beneficial to the EFL in the long term...
But the extra money is not taken from the teams in the PL: it will be taken from removing parachute payments and reducing the PL to 18 - the PL elite will still be OK
I actually think that cutting parachute payments is a decent idea but the rest of it doesn't well thought out to me
And what happens in the following season when there's a motion that 90% of the PL income will go to the top nine clubs and the other nine share 10%? The Big Six clubs all vote for the motion and the following season, the rest of the PL have to work out how to pay £90m of wages with an income of...
