I agree with the distinction you've drawn. I don't think it's helpful to refer to Lallana, Gross, Ali J and Trossard as midfielders. They're not really. It's more that there's no universally accepted terminology for the more advanced position they usually play in. I also agree with the names...
Agree Davy isn't our most consistent. On his day a wonderful midfielder with the best technique at the club. However he has had a few long spells of poor form whilst at the club and was deservedly left out at the end of the season.
