    [Brighton] Old Brighton Postcard

I moved to Brighton in the mid 80s for a job above Dunn&Co and never realised there was a flat next door. I also recently discovered I still own a 7" Tom Hark single in a picture sleeve, bought at a time I never imagined I'd end up living most of my life here!

I bemused, amused and bored my 91 yo mother, wife and 18yo daughter with this information, all in one week!

I love this thread, but I have planorak / history / flaneur tendencies.

Yes, that's the reservoir I was referring to. Edit: I was trying to find out more about this and came across this on My Brighton and Hove: https://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/topics/public-services/water-supply/water-supply-2 Bizarrely (for me), it also mentions the old Pumping Station at...

I might be wrong, but I think the building is the church (now flats) on the corner of Southover and Belgrave Streets. The Constant Service pub on Islingword Road is so named because it's near the reservoir which provided a constant service of water to the relatively new area of Hanover. I don't...

    [Brighton] Old Brighton Postcard

I used to live on Coleman St near the church and my daughter went to the nursery. The shape of the roof is different to the photo - it has 3 gable ends facing south west. There were quite a few other churches and schools in the area, some now demolished. I'm going to draw lines on a map to see...

Thanks for posting. These photos were taken before the seawall and Undercliff were built. Current best estimates of coastal erosion are that with no active intervention in maintaining the beach and sea wall, the cliffs would erode 20m by 2055 and 40m by 2105, taking the A259 with it.

Not a postcard, but Historic England's aerial photography archive is worth a look. Unfortunately I can't work out how to embed any photos from it.

Amazing that York House still appears to be trading as an offie. Same family?

My first job in Brighton was above what is now Metro Bank (it was Dunn & Co then).

I actually prefer the new building. It turns the corner very elegantly. Just waiting for the Turkish barbers to open on the ground floor.

That's interesting- never knew. I thought it was an 80s invention. Every time I see one in Brighton now, I wonder if it's you! I used to be into the rocking scene and The Cramps are my second favourite band of all time. Edit - and I used to have the T shirt of your avatar.

More info on the Pylons here https://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/places/placetrans-2/stone-pillars-on-a23/stone-pylons-on-the-a23 including the rather wonderful, welcoming inscription 'Hail guest, we ask not what thou art. [Brighton] Old Brighton Postcard

This is a great thread. I moved to Brighton to work in the planning department of the Borough Council (located above Dunn and Co, now Metro bank) and its fascinating to see changes/lack of or indeed improvements in Conservation Areas. The exception being the old floral market because it was...
